| How to get your Xat chat “torched”
Having your Xat chat “torched”
is an entirely avoidable predicament. Recently I ran into a situation
myself; I had a chat on promo (not a common occurrence for me) and was
kindly reminded by a member of Xat staff that I ran the risk of having
my chat “depromo’ed” due to something that had gotten past me. In fact,
even after having it mentioned to me, I still needed some assistance
tracking it down. Seems that a user was using a pornographic image as an
avatar. Unbeknownst to me, when our chats are on promo we need to
actively search out those sorts of things. Anyway, long story short, I
found said user hiding on a second tab and banned him. Catastrophe
averted!
I've compiled a few key points that everyone should take note of if and when they decide to promote their Xat chat group.First, here is Xat’s current list of rules for chat promotion:
- All aspects of the chat must be suitable for age 14 and over
- The chat must comply with the terms
- The chat must be moderated while it is promoted (no bad language etc)
- Inappropriate visitors should be banned immediately (not kicked)
- NEW: There must be no inappropriate links and no links to binaries (eg programs)
- NEW: Chats on promotion must NOT sell ranks e.g. sell moderator
- At least one owner or moderator must be visible at all times
- The chat must be in the correct language
- Other chats can be promoted at the same time as yours
- Promotion costs may vary, press “Get cost” to find out
- The chat must be open to all (not set members only, live mode etc)
You have a bad chat name or description
Do you
like giving your group chats inappropriate names and chat descriptions?
You may not know it, but you run the risk of having your chat instantly
closed without any warning. Do yourself a favor and choose something
that isn’t offensive, obscene, illegal, racist, drug related, or
anything that could be construed as inappropriate.
Inappropriate verbage or chat-speak
Keep a close eye on the chat screen. During the short time that your
chat is promoted you will invariably run into chat trolls and
troublemakers. They will flood your chat, argue and insult your
visitors, then run off into the night hopefully never to be seen again.
The problem here, is that if you don’t take immediate action (this
happens on very busy promoted chats), Xat staff could be lurking in the
darkness ready to tag your chat for suspension. Again, you need to be on
your toes 100% of the time and watch out for swearing (this includes
your staff), scamming, and inappropriate subject matter. Use some common
sense here. What it comes down to ultimately is you’re running a chat
on Xat’s homepage. They want you to keep it as clean as possible while
it’s there.
Inappropriate chat nick
It’s important to keep an eye on your chat visitors. Scan the list of
nicks both above and below the “chat fold” and remember, even if you
don’t see an offending nick, you are still responsible for it. If you
have more than one tab spread your moderators out and ask them to keep
their eyes open.
Inappropriate avatar
No one should have a chat on promotion without having first opened their grid tab.
This will allow you to see several user avatars while you tend to your
chat. Anyone with an offensive or inappropriate image should immediately
be banned from your chat.
Inappropriate content below the chat This
should be obvious. Any Xat chat, whether on promotion or not, should
never have any inappropriate content below the chat; questionable,
illegal, or otherwise, you must abide by Xat’s terms of service.
Failure to remedy these types of behaviors in a timely manner will be dealt with swiftly.
Per Xat "…if
you do not abide by these rules your promotion will end with no notice,
no refund of xats and your group will be delisted and blocked from
further promotion…"
